We are midwives first and foremost because we love birth. We are not just attending women and families at birth, but are in service to them. We have witnessed hundreds of women birth naturally, wildly, wonderfully in their strength. We believe 100% in women’s bodies and their ability to grow, birth, nurse and love their babies.
Our role as midwives is to guide you in the birth that you want to have. Having a natural childbirth at home can be the most empowering event of a woman’s life and is a great opportunity for bonding between mother, father, and baby. It is our role to enable trust and belief in one’s self and the childbearing process-- to facilitate a safe passage for all. We take time to develop this trust and to provide education to women and their families so that they may make informed decisions. You have a say, you take responsibility. This is your baby and your birth. Good prenatal care is a balance of nutrition, exercise, and relaxation. It’s normal day-to-day living. Midwifery care monitors normal well-being and strives to maintain health and trust in one’s body. There are many subjects that will be discussed: available testing, fetal development, relaxation techniques, breastfeeding, and newborn care. It is our job to uphold your personal beliefs and values and to empower you as you continue this journey in life.
We are deeply grateful to serve our community as midwives and feel blessed to be doing this work.
Changing the world one birth at a time.

We are homebirth midwives because of our love and respect for women and babies, and our desire to see them experience the birth process in a manner that honors their dignity and power.
We are licensed midwives, graduates of Birthingway College of Midwifery, and mothers ourselves. We enjoy offering our comprehensive midwifery services and feel honored to help babies be born in a way that is peaceful, joyful, and calm.
As midwives, we value creating a relationship of trust by providing women and their families with individualized, compassionate care during the childbearing year. We facilitate personal, informed decision-making through the midwifery model of care and evidence-based practices.
We recognize that birth is a natural process and strive to create an undisturbed, private, and safe environment with the attendance of your trusted birth attendants, utilizing the lowest amount of interventions as possible with respect to the well-being of the mother and baby.
Pregnancy and birth are times of sacred transformation, for the woman, baby, and family.  Homebirth can provide an opportunity to grow personally, emotionally, and spiritually. Birth can be joyful, creative, transformative, and empowering.

I provide women with good quality care in their child-bearing life and guide them into the new phase of their lives as parents. The way you birth helps to create a strong foundation for the mother, father, and baby as a family. I believe that good prenatal and postpartum support helps the transition into a strong, loving family unit. I am the mother of 5 and grandmother of soon-to-be 2. My children range in age from 9-23. I am privileged to be the midwife of both my grandchildren. I enjoy motherhood and have an inexhaustible passion for birth.
I have attended numerous births in Nevada County and surrounding areas for over 11 years. It has been an honor to be witness to so many beautiful, spiritual, and empowering births. My experience in midwifery consists of apprenticing with a home birth midwife for 6 years and training in a high volume birth center in Texas. My formal studies were completed through the National Midwifery Institute, which I graduated from in 2010. I maintain emergency and first aid top-level requirements. I am also continuously learning and taking classes to always broaden my knowledge and skills to be able to provide the very best care that there is.
Birth is a sacred and special time for a family. My goal is to honor each family and to keep the space for this new family holy and sacred.

I offer a unique hands-on, holistic, and evidence-based care model that blends the ancient art of midwifery with current research and best practices. This care model supports not just your physical well being but also your emotional and psychological well being. I provide home birth, fertility, and well body services for individuals and families from the foothills of Nevada City to the urban landscape of Sacramento.

My journey to becoming a Midwife began with my own birth in 1981. I was the first of three children born at home. From that peaceful beginning came an interest in working with mothers and families throughout their entire pregnancy, birth and postpartum: educating them to be empowered to make choices that are right for them. I began attending births in 2004. For several years I supported women as a Doula. I later traveled to Latin America where I had the privilege of studying with Indigenous Granny Midwives and Traditional Birth Attendants. During this time I was able to deepen my understanding of natural childbirth and the inherent wisdom women hold to give birth.
In 2007 I began a MEAC Accredited Midwifery Education Program at Maternidad la Luz in El Paso, Texas. In 2008 I became a Licensed Midwife in the state of Texas, as well as a Certified Professional Midwife. At that time I began working as a staff Midwife at the Maternidad la Luz Birth Center. Upon finishing the three-year program in the fall of 2009 I returned to California and began practicing in conjunction with other Midwives.  I am licensed by The Medical Board of California, as well as certified by the North American Registry of Midwives. Over the last 10 years, I have continued to attend births in a variety of settings including home, hospital, and birth center.
As a midwife, it is my mission to support women and their families to create a birth experience that works for them.  I honor a mother’s intuition and respect it as an integral part of her decision-making process.  I am committed to providing the necessary information parents need, to make informed choices about their care, and the care of their newborn. I strongly believe that how families choose to birth their children is a delicate process and it should be respected every step of the way.
I currently divide my time between Nevada County, California, and San Ignacio, Belize. I speak English and Spanish.

Leah brings the experience and confidence gained from working and teaching in the high volume birth setting for three years. Beth studied at Birthingway College of Midwifery and has attended births in five different countries. She comes from a very dynamic scope working in rural birthing clinics in Senegal, Bali, Guatemala, Portugal, a home birth practice in Santa Cruz, and a birthing clinic in Santa Rosa. Both Leah and Beth share a breadth of experiences working cross-culturally, gaining an expansive midwifery lens, learning from many women, creating adaptability, and a deep base of skilled knowledge. Collectively they have attended nearly five hundred births. Leah and Beth are a strong cohesive team founded on love, respect, mindfulness, clear and authentic communication with each other, and the families they work with. Birth Awake recognizes the enormous responsibility of providing respectful midwifery care as the powerful process can impact the family for a lifetime. Beth and Leah hold this responsibility with the utmost respect, diligence, care, and humble gratitude to all mamas, babies, and families that they are blessed to work with.
